Quick summary:

What’s this booklet about?

In today’s globalized world, more and more U.S. citizens prefer to live and work outside the United States. We can divide such U.S. citizens into three categories, namely, (i) expats, (ii) digital nomads, and (iii) U.S. citizens who have never succeeded to build strong connections with the United States.

You are American and you are an expat who wants to avoid taxes.

The first category includes people whose upbringing took place in the United States, but they left their homeland in order to work, marry, or just live in other countries.

You are an American digital nomad (and obviously you want to avoid taxes).

Digital nomads are people who constantly travel from country to country and work from their mobile computers, thus avoiding becoming tax residents of the countries in which they stay.

Only born. You were born in America but left America shortly after.

The third category includes mainly individuals who left the United States shortly after they were born.
Taxation because of citizenship. One needs to be aware that the United States levies taxes on all of its citizens, irrespective of the countries in which they live or work. This means that the individuals in each of the aforementioned three categories may be subject to U.S. taxes even if they have not been in the United States for years.

Attention!

Such individuals may also be obliged to report their earnings to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS). A U.S. citizen who earns more than $12,200 (as of 2019) is required to file a tax return with the IRS, no matter whether she succeeds to reduce its tax burden to zero by using legal tax optimization techniques.

Taxpayers who fail to submit a tax return to the IRS may be subject to a 6% interest on the taxes due, fines, and even imprisonment.

Do I get an invoice?2020-05-18T11:43:33+03:00

Customers who require an invoice are able to generate an invoice automatically from a link on their email receipt.
When customers click on the “Need an invoice –>Generate” link, they are then able to enter their details including a VAT number to generate a PDF invoice.

What about EU VAT? Do I need to give my full address?2020-05-18T11:50:11+03:00

From 1 January 2015, the rules around the European Union VAT place of supply of services will change. The 2015 European Union VAT law requires all sales of digital items (such as our ebooks) in the EU to pay VAT based on the location of the customer.
Although it might seem unnecessary to ask for an address to receive a digital item, unfortunately, a billing address is one of the customer details we are required by the 2015 EU VAT law to obtain.
